A Tribute

Fantastic Mr. Milo
Earth, 2004-2021

Suddenly we had to let you go
Suddenly what was routine has become strange
The begging for food from our plates
Immediately after your dinner
The sound of your hard nails tap tap tapping
Against the tiles as you strolled about, room to room
Suddenly you were no longer the rambunctious puppy we once knew
Plopping down for a nap wherever you wished
Ignoring our summons because you could

You no longer cared about running wild and willful
Up and down the streets of the neighbourhood
Daring us to catch you if we could
But eventually returning home on your own terms

You began to wish only for light walks
And eventually didn’t want to climb the stairs no more
Food was your comfort
And some lengthy afternoon naps
Nights, though, were often restless
Did you know those were to be
Your final days with us?

It was all so suddenly
They only remain as memories
But you couldn’t simply cease like this
You must be somewhere else
Living some other life
A better life, I bet
You must be young again
No sickness in your body
No pain in your limbs
You must be enjoying some hearty runs
Across green fields
With cool and refreshing springs
